A Heartfelt Tribute: The Creation and Unveiling of GoobyIn the realm of artistic expression, few subjects evoke as much warmth and intrigue as the beloved canine companion. My latest work, Gooby, an 11x14 oil-on-birch portrait adorned with shimmering gold leaf, is a deeply personal tribute to a lifelong friend, Gayle, and her cherished dog who passed away last year. This painting, inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, captures not just Gooby’s likeness but the essence of his spirit, weaving a vibrant tapestry of color, texture, and emotion that celebrates companionship, loyalty, and the unspoken bond between humans and their four-legged friends. The Spark of InspirationThe journey of Gooby began with a poignant moment—a Facebook post from Gayle, mourning her sweet companion a year after his passing. As a dog lover and her friend since our fourth-grade days, her grief struck a chord. I saw in her words an opportunity to create something lasting, a keepsake to honor the love Gooby shared with her. The composition of Gooby’s photo, with its sweeping C-shaped pose and endearing eyes looking back, sparked an unexpected connection to Klimt’s iconic The Kiss. The golden hues and swirling forms of that masterpiece inspired the direction of the painting, guiding my choices in color, texture, and mood.
The creation process was a labor of love, starting with the preparation of the birch panel. I applied layers of gesso to create a smooth, receptive surface, setting the stage for Gooby’s portrait. The first “dead” layer followed—a muted foundation to build depth—before I layered vibrant oil glazes and delicate gold leaf. Each brushstroke told a story, weaving together the texture of Gooby’s fur and the softness of his expression. The interplay of golden yellows and rich browns created a backdrop that feels both ethereal and grounded, reminiscent of sunlight filtering through leaves, enveloping Gooby in a warm embrace. The gold leaf, in particular, amplified the warmth of his fur, suggesting a connection to nature and a timeless spirit.

The eyes, wide and expressive, became the heart of the painting. They seem to hold a universe of thoughts and emotions, a silent dialogue that resonates with anyone who has shared their life with a dog. This portrait transcends mere representation; it’s a celebration of the joy, loyalty, and unspoken bond that Gooby embodied. The textured surface invites viewers to reach out, to connect, to feel the love embedded in every stroke.
The Emotional UnveilingThe unveiling was a moment I’ll never forget. As Gayle saw Gooby for the first time, she gasped, broke into tears, and whispered, “How beautiful.” Her reaction was a testament to the power of art as remembrance and healing. In that moment, the painting became more than a portrait—it was a bridge to memories, a way to honor the love and loss that define our connections with our pets. The vibrant colors and shimmering gold leaf, inspired by Klimt, captured not just Gooby’s likeness but the essence of his spirit, inviting quiet reflection on the beauty of shared existence.
